Why this theme? Why Now?

The answer has two parts: If Entrepreneur Centers don't use their experience and make their toolset and research available around campus, then the campus will go on without us. The second part is that much of what we have done over the past 25 years may not be appropriate for the next 25 years.

How will we answer this challenge?

By fully utilizing the talents of each and every Director in attendance at the 2011 Conference. We have reviewed the past several conferences evaluations. All evaluations are positive but many Directors have stated clearly that they want more involvement and less listening to lectures. One director's comment stated it distinctly "More brainstorming among all directors with less presentation."

We have chosen several topics to explore. For each of these topics those Directors who have an interest in that topic will be split into separate rooms. They will start by defining their programs as they existed five years ago, how they exist today, most importantly, what they must do for tomorrow.

At the end of that session the group is being asked to summarize define their suggestion on two PowerPoint slides and present their recommendation to the assembly of all Directors. Copies of those slides and a video of the presentations will be sent to each Director a week following the conference.

  • The format for GCEC 2011 is based on engagement. There are two opening plenary session. There are no lectures by Director’s. Our goal is to have every single Director make a contribution to defining our future. We have highlighted 12 important categories to explore. In each of these topics, teams of Center Directors will dissect and personalize the key challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

  • Are today's non-business students equipped to take a business course?
Do Master and Ph.D. candidates on our campus have a need and desire to learn the mindset and tool sets of Entrepreneurship?
Will these students come to us or will other schools on our campus start Entrepreneurship Courses around their own disciplines?
The world of business, your world is changing, your customers are changing. These questions and many more will all be addressed and hopefully answered.

  • What was the essence of our programs and pedagogy five years ago, what is it now, and what will it look like five years from now? The theme of engagement continues. All attendees will meet in 45 minute discussions and then present their suggested actions on how to enhance all of our Programs.
For those Centers that have been challenged for their relevancy as an academic entity by the classic disciplines in our institutions, the changing world makes this an exciting time. IT IS OUR TIME.

For more than 50 years Entrepreneurship has been part of the curriculum of many Universities and Colleges across the country and in the later years around the world. This period was marked by great innovation and accomplishments.

For the most part Entrepreneurship at that time was located exclusively in the Business School. Today you can find students exchanging entrepreneurial ideas in Engineering, the Arts, Cinema, Journalism, Education and the Health Science Campus and as an elective in an Accounting Class.

New areas of interest have also been prominent in the Business Schools. Social Entrepreneurship is an exciting emerging field. History may consider this our greatest accomplishment.

This year’s GCEC Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers at Marshall focuses on helping each of us to define the roles our individual Centers will play in this Changing World.
